Review: D-Link M15 Eagle AI Mesh WiFi – A Warm Blanket of Connectivity

We have tried and tested many forms of in-home WiFi extenders here at SonnyDickson with mixed results to say the least. There’s always a weakness – too big, too ugly, no ethernet ports, LED lights brighter than the sun and worst of all, ones that just didn’t work unless they were within 2 metres of the main access point in the house.

So when D-Link came to us with the D-Link M15 Eagle Pro AI Mesh 3-pack the opening paragraph of this review almost wrote itself – “…here we go again.” But no.

Straight out of the box the M15 Eagle Mesh system with AI smarts makes a very compelling case. Three small cubes about 8cm x 8cm x 8cm with a small LED on the front side.

Immediately D-Link have me won over with a small sticker on one of the cubes that indicated that this was the “parent” device with the other two being the remote “children”. I once burnt an afternoon with one of the systems where the parent (or base station) device wasn’t marked and it took hours to work out what the issue was.

I was keen to see how this sort of system worked in a multi-level terrace so with the right location selected, we got to work. Luckily we have just installed an Optus 5G Wireless Broadband connection in the house so I’m expecting the D-Link EAGLE PRO AI AX1500 Mesh System to be a big improvement.

D-Link have a dedicated app for the Eagle range of WiFi 6 devices, so within a few minutes I had that downloaded and we were into set-up mode.

The next task was to work out the best locations for the Extender units that use the mesh technology to connect to the other boxes and spread high-speed, low latency internet across the house.

Another element to consider is the various devices around the house that might benefit from a wired connection to one of the extenders. Remember, for all the convenience of wireless connectivity, you cannot beat connecting an Apple TV or a NAS or a printer to a LAN connection. Thankfully each of the Extenders and the Base Station have a LAN and WAN connection delivering Gigabit connectivity.

For me, it was the ability to connect my Apple TV to an Extender. We share a NAS between houses that enables us to run PLEX in multiple locations and enjoy all our favourite music, photos and movies where ever we are. Taking wireless interference out of the equation for that last couple of metres makes all the difference.

I’m happy to report that even in a multi-storey, double brick home, the D-Link M15 Eagle AI Mesh WiFi system works a treat with little to no degradation of coverage and sharp speed and low-latency in every room.

The AI aspect of the Eagle system also ensures that your WiFi connectivity is optimised on a regular basis to maximise connectivity.

If you’ve got connectivity challenges in the home, the D-Link EAGLE PRO AI AX1500 Mesh System (3-Pack) is definitely worth a look for $379.95.
