Review: DJI Osmo Action 3 – Capture Every Adventure in Stunning Detail

Are you ready to capture all of your wildest outdoor adventures?  The DJI Osmo Action 3 action cam will make this a breeze, even in the eye of a storm! This rugged camera can withstand cold temperatures, has a long battery life, and is ready to take on any adventure you throw its way.

DJI are undoubtedly in the front of your mind when it comes to consumer and professional flying devices, but they also took their expansive camera expertise and created the Osmo series of action cameras.

Recently, DJI kindly sent us the Osmo Action 3 Adventure Combo. With this pack you get the 4K HDR Action Camera, the huge 1.5 meter extension rod, a quick release system for attaching it to various brackets and connectors plus a superb 3 battery charging pack.

Taken as whole, it sounds almost too good to be true, but this is no gimmick, the camera has some serious video skills. With its ability to film in 4K resolution at an impressive 120 frames per second, every moment will be captured in dynamic, ultra-smooth detail. And with a 155-degree super-wide field of view, you’ll be able to capture every aspect of your wild rides in immersive, breathtaking detail.

When it comes to colour accuracy, the Osmo Action 3 is no slouch. Its colour temperature sensor intelligently adjusts white balance and AE to ensure that you get true-to-life colours, even in complex lighting environments like when scuba or free diving deep below the surface.

But the Osmo Action 3 isn’t just about the video quality – it’s also built to be tough and durable. It has a nifty quick-release frame which wraps around the device and enhances impact resistance. With a combination of powerful magnets and an additional positioning clip you can easily switch between horizontal and vertical orientations in seconds making it more than ready for high-intensity scenarios. We were impressed with the magnetic system which allows you to position the connections very easily and gives you confidence you’re not going to lose the camera by accident even working with chilly hands.

Made for the outside world

We tested the device when the weather took a turn for the worst in the UK with temperatures down to -7C every day where we live. After that we had a chance to visit the French Alps where the weather on some days was disturbingly awful with extreme cold and poor visibility. The camera took everything we threw at it (including some impressive falls). The 3 battery charging pack certainly came in handy as we were out for hours and just swapped batteries over while taking a quick break.

Even in these cold temperatures, the Osmo Action 3 was a champ. It can continuously record for up to 150 minutes in temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F), making it the perfect companion for all of your winter adventures. And with an extended battery life of up to 160 minutes, you can capture entire adventures on a single charge. And when it’s time to recharge, the Osmo Action 3’s fast-charging technology means that you can power up to 80% in just 18 minutes – enough for approximately two hours of shooting.

It also boasts RockSteady 3.0, the latest version of DJI’s intelligent stabilisation algorithm, which effectively eliminates camera shake in all directions. This feature even works while recording at 4K/120fps, providing a stable and immersive first-person perspective. Plus, with HorizonSteady, you can correct tilt at any angle. This means that your footage will remain horizontally level, even through heavy bumps and radical 360°’s. This was especially noticeable when skiing where we noticed the videos quality remained perfectly stable even when flying down an icy, bumpy ski slope while holding the camera with the selfie stick.

Built to last

But the Osmo Action 3’s durability doesn’t stop there, its front screen, rear screen, and lens protective cover are all made with high-strength Gorilla Glass, which is wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, and 1.5-meter drop resistant, featuring a hydrophobic coating, which repels water quickly without affecting image quality.

The Action’s 3 has 3 microphones which work superbly in all conditions at capturing clear sound, plus a super-intuitive voice control system which makes for easy control when your hands are occupied or just cold. It has to be noted that in action, it worked fine on a chair lift or on the side of a windy mountain.

User friendly

And talking of usability, the dual full-color touchscreens make it a breeze to control all of the parameters and playback like resolutions and various modes. Even though the front screen is quite small, we were particularly taken with how easy it makes vlogging and framing selfies and it never feels cramped or awkward.

Also available is the camera’s companion phone app; Dji Mimo. This connects to the camera with bluetooth and allows you to download images and video via a local wifi connection. This allows you to sccot through the images on the camera on your phone and download or share them quickly and easily. Included in the app is a template based video editor plus all the tools you’d expect like colour adjustments trimming and more. You’ll also find face recognition and various photo enhancement modules if that’s your bag.

The Osmo Action 3 is the ultimate action cam for capturing all of your thrilling adventures, plus it’s very happy and practical in the quiet moments too. So don’t wait – get your hands on the DJI Osmo Action 3 today and capture your funnest moments!
