An overview of Kia’s electric evolution
Kia has been at the forefront of the electric revolution. Their journey in the field of electric vehicles has been nothing short of remarkable. Kia started its electric journey in 2014 with the Soul EV, a quirky, boxy city car that was ahead of its time. The Soul EV laid the foundation for Kia’s future electric cars, and the brand has come a long way since then. The Soul EV was only sold in South Korea, the US and Europe.
The Kia EV6 GT is the current zenith of Kia’s electric evolution. It culminates years of research, development, and real-world testing. It’s a testament to Kia’s dedication to exciting EVs without compromising performance or practicality.
A long wheelbase and short overhang maximise interior space and handling.
The Kia EV6 GT represents the future direction of Kia’s electric vehicle lineup. It’s a step towards a more sustainable future and a giant leap in the world of electric vehicles. With the EV6 GT, Kia has truly revolutionised the electric vehicle market.

Kia EV6 GT as your daily driver: The practical aspects
Now, let’s discuss the practical aspects of the Kia EV6 GT. Despite its impressive performance, the Kia EV6 GT is designed to be your daily driver. It’s a car that you can use for your daily commute, grocery shopping, or school runs. The car offers ample space for up to five occupants and has very generous boot space, making it a practical choice for families.
The Kia EV6 GT has a very generous boot (490L) but the lip could be a little lower for better access.
The Kia EV6 GT also offers a comfortable ride. The premium seats are heated, cooled and ergonomically designed, and the cabin is well insulated from outside noise, ensuring a quiet and peaceful driving experience. The car also has many convenience features, including keyless entry, automatic climate control, and wireless phone charging, making your daily commute hassle-free.
Furthermore, the Kia EV6 GT is economical to run. The car requires less maintenance than conventional petrol or diesel cars, and the cost of electricity is significantly lower than the fuel cost. This makes the Kia EV6 GT a practical and economical choice for daily driving.
Fixed Service Plan Costs
When you purchase a Kia EV6, you can purchase the scheduled services in advance via the Kia Service Plan. This guarantees the costs of your 15,000km service intervals.
You can purchase 3 years, 5 Years or 7 Years of servicing at the time of the vehicle purchase & control your future spending by paying for all your services in advance.
Weekend excitement with Kia EV6 GT: Performance and Thrills
The Kia EV6 GT is not just a practical daily driver; it’s also a thrilling performance car. The car offers exciting performance thanks to its powerful dual motor setup and advanced electric powertrain. The Kia EV6 GT delivers exhilarating acceleration, significant torque, and responsive handling, making it a delight to drive.
The Kia EV6 GT also offers a range of driving modes, allowing you to tailor the driving experience to your liking. Whether you’re cruising on the highway or carving through twisty mountain roads, the Kia EV6 GT is up for the challenge. The car also features an advanced all-wheel-drive system, ensuring excellent traction and stability in all driving conditions. Press the green GT button on the steering wheel, and everything is immediately turned up to FULL! This EV goes from being thrilling to a car with every hair on your body standing to attention.
The all-wheel-drive system offers incredible grip on any road surface. It does, however, have some side effects. On tight, full-lock, low-speed turns in car parks or doing a quick u-turn, the low-profile Michelin Pilot Sport tyres do crab as the front wheels push the nose of the car away from your direction of travel.
With its impressive range and fast charging capabilities, you can go on long drives without worrying about running out of charge. The Kia EV6 GT truly offers the best of both worlds – the practicality of a daily driver and the excitement of a performance car.
A portable power supply
The Kia EV6 GT supports interior and exterior Vehicle To Load (V2L), allowing you to power and charge devices and accessories on the go. Right now, it can charge any electric device with its 230-240V AC power supply at 3.6kW.
Power anywhere you need it with V2L on the Kia EV6 GT
What’s it like to live with a Kia EV6 GT?
The Kia EV6 GT is a very striking car to look at. From any angle, it’s a very beautifully styled EV. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and low centre of gravity, that style translates to practicality with the much more accommodating interior space.
One of my favourite attributes is that the EV6 GT still feels like a car – not something some propeller-heads dreamed up in a lab. There are strong Kia Stinger vibes in this car. The switchgear, the lovely, thick steering wheel, and the braking dynamics feel are all there.
As ever, no car is perfect, and there are a few niggles on the EV6 GT (but I had to really split hairs!).
The boot lip could be slightly lower for easier loading and unloading of bags and golf clubs.
If you’re hurrying to do a three-point turn to grab a car park on the street, the rotary-dial gear selector can be clumsy to work and slow to respond.
I mentioned the all-wheel-drive crabbing earlier in the review. The low-profile Michelin Pilot Sport tyres are $300-$400 a pop, so you’ll need to keep an eye on the front left tyre in particular.
What about as an EV?
Driving an EV in Australia is getting easier, particularly in the large capital cities and regional centres. The 77.4kWh battery has a very good range, but if you mash the accelerator pedal, that range is consumed very quickly.
Thankfully, like all Hyundai Motor Group EVs, the regeneration system is excellent. As we experienced with the IONIQ 6 recently, if you use the regen paddles and the i-Pedal system, you can be very efficient with power use and harvesting.
Make the most of your energy recovery with the paddles behind the leather steering wheel.
When you need to plug the Kia EV6 GT into a public charger, there are even more ways you can be efficient with your time recharging the car. Kia kindly provided me with a Type-2 to Type-2 cable, which allows you to connect the car to BYO cable systems such as the Chargefox network. Unfortunately, it was a single-phase cable, meaning charging took much longer than needed.
Come prepared with a cable from EVSE.
Our great friends at EVSE also loaned us their popular 22kW 3-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, significantly improving performance. You can see from the photo below the 3-phase EVSE cable (on the left) is much thicker to handle more effective power delivery.
3-phase power transfer makes all the difference in Type 2 cables.
If you’re considering an EV – and if you are, you should certainly drive the Kia EV6 GT – then make sure to think about your potential recharging scenarios and what equipment you’re likely to need.
In conclusion, the Kia EV6 GT is more than worth it! It’s a car that offers top-notch performance, everyday practicality, and excellent value for money. It’s a car that meets all your daily driving needs while also offering thrilling performances for your weekend drives.
No other EV is this good-looking at the moment.
The Kia EV6 GT is a testament to Kia’s commitment towards performance and practicality. It’s a car that is not just environmentally friendly but also fun to drive and effortless to use. If you’re considering buying an electric vehicle, the Kia EV6 GT should be near the top of your list.
So, are you ready to embrace the future of transportation with the Kia EV6 GT? I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. The Kia EV6 GT is not just a car. It’s a lifestyle choice, a good-looking statement, and a commitment to a more sustainable future. And it’s a choice you’ll be glad you made.
